New Tempo 30 rules: municipalities are happy about more security!

New Wind for Tempo 30: The discussion about speed limits in German communities is picking up speed! Around two weeks ago, important legal changes were put into force that enable municipalities to expand the speed restriction of 30 km/h. These innovations could be groundbreaking for a safer traffic situation, because in the future highly frequented school routes and squares near playgrounds and facilities for people with disabilities will be recognized as criteria for km/h.

That means no more effective evidence of a special danger situation! But be careful-for the time being, the changes in Donau-Ries cannot be implemented directly. The administrative regulations must first be adjusted. However, municipal officers are optimistic. Nördlingen and Rain welcome the changes: "One step in the right direction," said the city administration. Oettingen also sees opportunities, already checks streets like Kellerstrasse as a potential Tempo 30 zones.

No general pace 30 in sight

While the new regulations have already given hope for safe roads, skepticism also creeps in. The city of Rain has already established several Tempo 30 zones in recent months, including the regulations for kindergartens and retirement homes. Nevertheless, a general introduction of speed 30 cannot be implemented legally and is not desired - the city considers a comprehensive application to be "not possible". In addition, citizens have to wait for the new regulation by spring 2025 before they can develop potential.
