Monheim decides: Citizens want to protect forest from landfill!
In Monheim in the Donau-Ries district, there is a major decision: On January 12, 2025, a citizens' decision will take place on the possible expansion of the earth excavation landfill. The city has been discussing this topic for almost a year and represents a premiere because a controversial topic is decided for the first time by a citizens' decision.
Mayor Günther Pfefferer described the upcoming citizens' decision as new for the city and emphasized the importance of citizen participation. The city council members have initiated the vote in order to give the population the opportunity to decide on the expansion of the landfill.
Citizens' initiative and clearing in the Monheimer Wald
The citizens 'initiative "Citizens' initiative for the preservation of the Monheimer Wald" was founded as part of the upcoming vote. On September 26, 2023, this initiative submitted a citizens' request with the aim of preserving the Monheim city forest in its current form. In this context, a total of 788 signatures were collected, 764 of which were recognized as valid. At least 430 applicable signatures are required for the citizens' request, which corresponds to ten percent of those entitled to vote. The election office has checked and confirmed all formal requirements.
The upcoming decisions could have far -reaching consequences for the community and the surrounding nature. Citizens now have the opportunity to give their vote and thus influence the development of their city.
