HSC Coburg fights back, but Minden takes victory!
After the triumphant 34:24 win against TuS Nettelstedt-Lübbecke, the handball players of HSC 2000 Coburg faced a new test: This time it was against GWD Minden, who had to move to neighboring Lübbecke due to renovation work on their Kampa hall. Despite a series of four competitive game wins, the starting position was anything but rosy. Coburg was without key players such as Felix Jaeger, Jan Schäffer and Arkadiusz Ossowski, while goalkeeper Petros Boukovinas returned, freshly handicapped after an injury. But the hoped-for comeback ended in a bitter defeat 38:33.
The game got off to a tough start for the HSC, GWD Minden took advantage of the weaknesses in the Coburg defense early on and quickly pulled ahead 10-3. Coach Mahmutefendic was dissatisfied, to say the least: “I can’t accept what we’re doing at the back!” However, the HSC did not let themselves be defeated. There was hope with a strong performance from Pavels Valkovskis, who contributed five goals. Despite being 14:21 behind at halftime, the Coburg team fought their way back. Valkovskis made it 23:28 with a blast and played a key role in the fighting comeback.
The thrilling comeback
The second round showed a completely different Coburg team. Valkovskis was unstoppable and reduced the deficit to 27:31. The defense was now more present and Minden found it difficult to score goals. In the final phase, when the score was 30:33, the HSC seemed to be back in the race. But Ian Weber from GWD Minden was the decisive factor that evening and scored the decisive goals. The dream of winning a point was shattered when Minden exploited the gap in the Coburg defense in the final minutes and ultimately won 38:33. This defeat diminishes Coburg's hopes; even after this intense encounter, the search for the optimal form remains an urgent issue.
At the encounter, 1,372 spectators witnessed a thrilling game. Boukovinas held up better in the second half after a weak first half, but it wasn't enough. The next game will show whether Coburg can learn from their mistakes and get back on the road to success.
