September 2024: Heat, rain and the first snow-a weather chapter!

In September 2024, Germany experienced a highlight of the extreme of weather technology. From glowing hot days that reminded of late summer, to an abrupt change of weather that heralded autumn, there were a lot to report. Obviously, the month could not only come up with pleasant outdoor pool temperatures, but also with an incredible amount of precipitation.

The weather course in the first weeks of September was particularly interesting, where the northeast was spoiled with summer temperatures of up to 35.2 degrees Celsius. However, this unexpected heat was soon replaced by a strong storm deep called Anett, which was particularly influenced by the east and southeast of the country. The effects were dramatic: heaviest rain and even snowfall in the high -altitude Alps.

rainy amounts and temperature changes

statistics show that September 2024 was much wetter overall than the reference period suggests. Almost 107 liters of precipitation per square meter were recorded, which corresponds to around 175 percent of the usual value. In the Berchtesgadener Land, the effects were particularly visible, where the rainfall was almost three times higher than usual. Heavy rains, triggered by Anett, also led to a tense flood situation on the Oder, which reinforced the danger situation in the residents' states.

The measured average temperature was 15.3 degrees Celsius, which is a deviation of over 2 degrees compared to the reference period from 1961 to 1990. The temperature tips were recorded in the first week and then fell to frosty values at the end of the month. On September 29, the lowest value of the month was measured in Messstetten with -2.1 degrees Celsius.

A look at the sunshine duration

A positive aspect of September 2024 was the above -average sunshine duration. With almost 177 hours the sun exceeded that is said to be 150 hours. In the northeast, especially on the Baltic Sea coast, the sunshine duration even reached up to 230 hours, while the southwest got significantly less sunlight with just 130 hours.

The weather was also changeable in Hesse: First, the sun warmed the region with over 30 degrees before a striking temperature crash initiated classic autumn. At the end of the month, the measured values were 15.2 degrees Celsius.

The events of September 2024 impressively document how diverse and surprisingly the weather in Germany can be. These climatic fluctuations not only underline the challenges of meteorological forecasts, but also offer interesting insights into the current changes within the climate.
