Snow chaos in Bayreuth? Winter service with 150 men is ready!
In Bayreuth, preparations for winter service are in full swing. Despite the mild start to the cold season, those responsible at the city building department are ready to act immediately in the event of an unexpected snowfall. According to a report by the Wiesentbote Up to 150 employees are deployed, supported by eleven powerful snow clearing vehicles, to keep the streets, sidewalks and cycle paths free of snow. Bernd Sellheim, head of the city building department, explained that the emergency services work in two shifts from early morning to evening and follow a clear list of priorities.
Strategy for effective winter service
In order to ensure road safety, the roads are cleared according to their urgency. The most heavily frequented traffic routes and danger spots have the highest priority. Examples of this are Wittelsbacher Ring and Albrecht-Dürer-Straße, where up to twelve employees work at the same time if necessary. In less-traveled residential areas, additional vehicles will be in action from 6 a.m. to clear the sidewalks for citizens orthogonally, as described in the report Bayreuth city building yard emerges.
However, the winter challenges that the city building yard has to overcome cannot be solved by vehicles and employees alone. Citizens are also encouraged to do their part in clearing snow, especially at the approximately 360 bus stops within the city. While the city building department takes over these clearances, the residents are responsible for the sidewalks in front of their properties, as Sellheim makes clear.
