Augsburg under the happy top 10: Where is Munich?
The current study of Glücksatlas 2024 shows that there is a high level of life satisfaction, especially in Augsburg. The city is placed high in the ranking of the happiest German cities and even exceeds the Bavarian capital of Munich.
The South German treasurer has been collecting data on life satisfaction in Germany under the title of Glücksatlas since 2011. This year it was examined again where people are happiest. In Augsburg, a city in Swabia, the results show that the people living there achieve a satisfaction of 7.20 points, which ensures the city of seventh place in the ranking.
The top 10 of the happiest cities
As part of the study, 25,557 citizens from the 40 largest cities were interviewed. The central question was: "How satisfied are you currently - all in all - with your life?" The answers were recorded on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 the highest satisfaction.
This year Kassel was able to conquer the top position, closely followed by Erfurt and Aachen. Kassel is at the top with 7.38 points, while Augsburg, as mentioned, took seventh place with 7.20 points. The list of the happiest cities is completed by Kiel, Krefeld and Münster.

Munich's unexpected placement
Although Munich is considered a large and wealthy city, it released comparatively poorly in the Glücksatlas 2024 and only reached 6.75 points, which brought the city the 24th place. It is also surprising that not only Munich ended up in the lower half of the ranking, but also Nuremberg, which fell 33th with 6.56 points.
An interesting knowledge from this study is that material factors such as income and economic prosperity do not play the main roles in life satisfaction. Rather, the quality of social life, such as family structures, security and green spaces, is crucial for the well -being of the citizens.
The SKL emphasizes that cities with a positive family and education policy and optimal health care can be performed best. These aspects clearly contribute to life satisfaction and explain why Erfurt, for example, does a better manner despite the lower income, than rich cities like Munich.
These results throw a new light on the general perception of happiness and satisfaction in urban spaces and show that a meaningful life is not only defined by material wealth.
