CDU boss Merz warns of cooperation with the AfD: We reveal our country!

In the midst of controversial votes on migration policy, the Union parties CDU and CSU call up to delimit the AfD. At a party congress in Bavaria, both CDU chairman Friedrich Merz and CSU chairman Markus Söder emphasized that they want to remain part of the "fire wall" against the right-wing AfD. "No, no and no: There is no collaboration," said Söder, while Merz said: "We would reveal our country if we would even give the little finger to make such a policy in Germany", as the Krone reported.

stricter measures for migration required

The controversy for migration increases after an Afghan man was arrested in connection with a fatal knife attack in Aschaffenburg. Merz announced that he wanted to bring stricter migration measures in the Bundestag next week, regardless of possible voices of the AfD, as DW reported. Despite Merz's repeated statements that he excludes cooperation with the AfD, this announcement causes concern. Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the "protective wall" for the AfD should not crumble.

The CDU and the CSU are under pressure after they had put support for their proposals for migration policy that could potentially include AfD votes. This resulted in violent criticism from the SPD, the Greens and the left. A survey showed that 65 % of Germans support the existing rejection of cooperation with the AfD, which shows that the concerns about Merz ’and the Union have grown. Politically, the backing for the three strongest parties - Union, AfD and SPD - disappears into ground, which is documented by the current survey values.
