Bavarian soldiers help Poland: remove flood damage quickly!
After the devastating flood events in Poland, the Bundeswehr announced its support. In confirmation from the Warsaw studio, it was announced that 120 soldiers of a tank pioneering battalion from Lower Saxony will be in use from the middle of this week. Your mission is to help the damage caused by floods.
This decision follows an invitation from the chief of staff of the Polish army. It is based on a bilateral aid agreement between Germany and Poland that has existed since 1999. The spokeswoman for the Bundeswehr underlined that this is the first use of this kind in Poland.
use of the Bavarian pioneers
Already last week some Bavarian pioneers were on site to get an idea of the situation. Lieutenant Colonel Karsten Dyba said that the damage was comparable to those of the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley. The soldiers from arch bring extensive experiences from previous missions, including after the Danube flood 2013 and the catastrophe in Simbach am Inn 2016. They were also active in the Ahr Valley.
In Poland, the German soldiers are primarily entrusted with tasks such as rubbish removal, restoration of river beds as well as the repair of roads and paths. Damaged bridges are also repaired and if necessary, makeshift bridges should be built. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had already emphasized in mid -September that the support from German soldiers was necessary in reconstruction and encouraged the citizens not to frighten themselves. The German military is on site as support, says Tusk.
The Bundeswehr's commitment is initially created for eight weeks. The background is the massive floods that affected several towns and cities in September, and which led tragically to the death of nine people.
