More trainees in the craft: Young people start in Ulm!

The Chamber of Crafts Ulm has reported an increase in training numbers for 2024. Around 2,800 young people begin their training in regional craft, which corresponds to an increase of 2 percent compared to the previous year. Despite the unoccupied apprenticeships, these positive developments occur, which amount to over 500 between Ostalb and Lake Constance. In 2023, 2,786 young people decided to teach in more than 130 craftsmanship.

The increase of 53 trainees is particularly gratifying compared to the previous year. The proportion of women among the trainees remains constant about 21 percent, while the rate of high school graduates increases to 17.5 percent among the trainees. In 2024, no refugee people who have started a manual apprenticeship were recorded; In the previous year there were 19th in 2022, 50 and 2021, 121 refugees entered an apprenticeship.

A high level of training of the companies in the Ulm Chamber area is evident in the increase in interest in health crafts (plus 4 percent) and food professions (plus 2 percent). Commercial professions also record a significant increase in 17 percent, which grows from 180 to 210 trainees. Climate-relevant craftsmanship such as car mechatronics and electronics engineers for energy and building technology are particularly in demand.

The current training numbers according to counties on December 31, 2024 are promising, but the challenge of the unoccupied apprenticeships remains. The breakdown shows:

  • Ostalbkreis: 583 trainees, 130 open apprenticeships
  • district of Heidenheim: 218 trainees, 20 open apprenticeships
  • Alb-Donau-Kreis: 326 trainees, 59 open apprenticeships
  • Stadtkreis Ulm: 245 trainees, 60 open apprenticeships
  • district of Biberach: 373 trainees, 71 open apprenticeships
  • district of Ravensburg: 711 trainees, 136 open apprenticeships
  • Bodenseekreis: 330 trainees, 44 open apprenticeships

In addition, the Ulm Chamber of Crafts reports that over 2,650 young people will start a manual apprenticeship in the new training year. This is seen as an increase of about 3 percent compared to the previous year. In demand are in particular climate -relevant activities and professions in the food trade. The increase in car mechatronics and plant mechanics for sanitary, heating and air conditioning technology is 5 or 11 percent. Specialist sellers in the food trade record an increase of over 20 percent.

The numbers of the new trainees show diversity in the educational qualifications: over 450 new apprentices have the Abitur, around 1,100 a secondary school leaving certificate and around 850 a secondary school leaving certificate. In addition, almost 13 percent of the new trainees are 24 years old or older. Despite the positive development, there are still over 500 open apprenticeships.
