Fight for the trees: City of Plant -based perspective on endangered green areas

Dreifaltigkeitsbergstraße, 78549 Spaichingen, Deutschland - In Spaichingen, the signs for numerous tree felling have become clear. After storm damage and the detection of diseases under different tree species, the city plans extensive measures for traffic safety and upgrading the city gross.

In June 2023 there was a storm that has already overturned a blood plum tree in Dreifaltigkeitbergstrasse. In addition, the strength of the winds broke off other branches this year, which even damaged parked cars. It is an alarming sign that other trees are also acutely endangered.

instability due to fungal attack

The blood plums in Dreifaltigkeitbergstrasse can no longer be saved. The city gardener Stefan Gaus informed the technical committee of the municipal council about the cause: an infestation with the plum-fire sponge, a mushroom that probably came into the trees through regular cutting measures. Falls by the damaged trees are planned for the coming months. Replacements are planned, in which several tree species such as flower ceiling and the robinia are considered. Such mixtures are intended to prevent tree diseases from spreading quickly in the future, as was the case with the blood plums.

The situation is similar in the urban area. In Bahnhofstraße, four dead Eberschen had to be felled, which according to the experts of the German Garden Office Head of Management Conference were not suitable for this location. The problem of tree health runs through various areas of the city, particularly clearly in the exotic park, where the big spruces and poplars have reached their end of life.

spruce and poplars dangerous

The situation in the exotic park is so critical that the droughts only exist through mutual hold. The poplars that are up to 25 meters high are also in poor condition. Two of them broke and fell close to a garden property in summer. The city plans to fell these trees and to refresh the area around the wooden bridge to make room for new, adapted trees.

In the forecourt of the town hall, a similar picture is shown. Here all trees are badly damaged and in the discussion is to fall. Stadtgärtner Gaus suggests setting up planters in their place until the area can be redesigned. The technical committee has also suggested the plan to try it for another year with these trees.

The oaks in the nearby parking lot are also in a critical condition. Again and again branches break off and represent a risk. Mayor Markus Hugger announced that a critical review should take place in order to decide any necessary felling.

tree sponsorships and new plantings

In the discussion about the tree felling, the city councilor Stefanie Eski suggested offering tree sponsorships for interested citizens. City architect Schmid added that everyone has the opportunity to sponsor, even if the waiting times for existing sponsorships have so far been manageable.

But there are also positive news about new plants. Six grape cherries are to replace the felled boars in Bahnhofstrasse. Other new trees are planned along the Westring and Sallancher Straße to replace the trees that have gone through flash damage.

The condition of the tree landscape in Spaichingen has therefore required a number of measures and decisions. Ensuring traffic safety is the top priority, and the city seems to take its responsibility seriously to ensure a healthy and appealing green area.
