Roman secret revealed: gigantic consecration in Hechingen!

A breathtaking find goes through archeology history! At current excavations in the Roman open-air museum in Hechingen-Stein, carried out by the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments (LAD), an impressive Roman consecration. Over 100 fragments with fascinating representations from the ancient world of gods were recovered! On Thursday, October 24, 2024, this sensational find first shone in the spotlight of the public.

"The monument apparently consisted of several stone blocks that were steeped up," explains archaeologist Dr. Klaus Kortüm. All of these cuboids are decorated with reliefs that show antique gods and mythical figures. But the story is shocking: in later times the monument was broken down into small parts and scattered everywhere. The fragments only offer blurred insights into the original figures, often only reconstructed by better preserved parts of other monuments. These invaluable pieces cannot be fully put together, instead we work on scale 3D prints to create a model that makes the monumental splendor visible.

a secret full of questions

The rarity of such gods in the Roman border regions of the Rhine and Danube is particularly interesting. According to Kortüm, the Hechingen piece seems to have been significantly larger than comparable finds. But the questions are piling up: Who was the high -ranking owner? Who consecrated the monument? And what was the secret behind the veneration? This discovery not only gives insights into the large Roman villa system from Hechingen-Stein, but also illustrates that there are still many secrets to ventilate!

A look at the history shows that the main building of the Roman estate was discovered between 1978 and 1981 between 1978 and 1981 - a real journey through time! The open -air museum was founded the following year and has constantly developed since then. Together with the local association and the state office, new excavations are realized almost annually, which make visitors accessible to the impressive overall system of a Roman manor.
