Treasures from the past: Exhibition in Gutenstein inspires everyone!
Gutenstein, Österreich - In Gutenstein's picturesque, a fascinating collection of historical exhibits is currently being exhibited. The historical meeting room in the community center houses the carefully assembled collectibles, which deal with the topics of household, agriculture and craft, military and religious motifs. This exhibition is the result of years of passionate search by Armin Wassmer, who has a special interest in the history of his homeland.
"I grew up in the castle, where you told of a ghost that is called the white sheep with long, pointed teeth," reports Wassmer, whose childhood is rooted in these stories. These influences led him to pursue his interest in local history by roaming the fields and meadows to find historical relics. "I spent a lot of time to search the legacies of our ancestors," he explains. The result of this effort: about 2,000 kilograms of scrap, which was collected and brought to recycling.
The variety of exhibits
The variety of collectibles is impressive. Among the exhibition objects can be found 1,170 buttons, 1138 cartridges, 497 musket balls and numerous religious motifs. Wassmer not only took care of collecting, but also about researching the finds: "I wanted to know what our ancestors carried and what they worked with." Many pieces tell their own small stories that lead to their origin and use.
Particularly proud is Wassmer on his find of parts of a railway bridge that was blown up in 1945 and is now one of the exhibits in the exhibition. This railway bridge plays an important role in local history because it was destroyed shortly before the invasion of French troops. Bomb fragments from a failed air raid on a train are also part of the collection.
buttons and brooches from different epochs
Another highlight of the exhibition is the impressive collection of buttons. "Buttons from different epochs, military and civilian, with numerous motifs I have always fascinated me," says Wassmer enthusiastically. You can also see belt and shoe buckles, brooches and many other small treasures that show visitors a picture of the story. Wassmer has also prepared many brochures with additional explanations for the exhibits.
The mayor Karin Mühlhans is also impressed by the exhibition: "The large number of finds that were discovered in our small village is remarkable. This exhibition is an absolute highlight for Gutenstein."
The exhibition can be visited on Saturday, October 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, October 20, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The festive occasion of the 50-year incorporation was a perfect opportunity to present the finds of the public and to bring the history of Gutenstein to life.
