Carl-Orff-School in VS: Urgent need for action for 160 students!

Am Hoptbühl, 78050 Villingen-Schwenningen, Deutschland - The Carl Orff School in Villingen-Schwenningen faces a significant space problem. With a current number of students from 130, which could increase to 160 by 2028, the need to convert or new construction is urgently discussed. The school acts as a special educational and advisory center (SBBZ) and specializes in children with special needs, especially in mental development.

In the Education Committee of the District Center, a feasibility study was recently presented, which examines the options for renovating or new construction. Architect Andreas Flöß explained the shortcomings of the building, which is now 45 years old. These shortcomings affect both the facade, which is heavily glazed and the energetic infrastructure. According to the information from the Office for School, Building Construction and Building Management, extensive renovation work is necessary.

The options at a glance

In the context of the feasibility study, three variants were presented: first a renovation of the existing building, which costs around twelve million euros at an estimated cost of around twelve million, as well as an additional eight million euros for an extension. Overall, costs of around 20 million euros would be expected, with the district administration expects a state subsidy of 33 percent.

The second variant provides for a new building on an adjacent urban property. This project could benefit from synergy effects with the neighboring Christy Brown School and would cost around 26 million euros. However, there would be no national subsidies in this case.

The third option to demolish the existing school building and build again in the same place appears more complicated. Here the Carl Orff School would have to move to other premises during the construction period of at least two and a half years, which is not desired by the headmaster.

The school management also explains that the increase in the number of students is not only locally, but a nationwide trend. Headmaster Michael Fraas and District Administrator Sven Hinterssehen emphasized that inclusion and the increased demands on the support of children with special needs have led to this increase. In the past, the integration of these children into regular classes was considered to be a better solution, but the reality has now shown that there is an increased need for specialized funding.

In view of the increasing number of students and the need for a solution, the district administration favors the renovation and expansion of the Carl Orff School. This decision is now to be recommended to the district council for acceptance in order to continue to offer the students an appropriate educational environment in the future.
