Biotonne newly thought: less fees and chic containers for everyone!

In the Black Forest Baar district, there are efforts to significantly increase the use of the bio bin. District Administrator Sven Hinterseh emphasizes that a more comprehensive use of the biotonne could help reduce the proportion of organic waste significantly in residual waste. Currently, only 68 percent of households in the region are connected to organic waste disposal.

"I am thrilled with what you can do out of organic waste", said Hinterseh during a meeting of the technical committee on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the bio bin. In this context, various strategies were discussed to persuade more households to order a bio bin.

Innovative approaches to increase the number of subscribers

Another innovative proposal concerns the introduction of new garbage containers. These should not only be designed more appealing, but also be equipped with special filter lids that prevent insects from penetrating. This makes the use of the biotonne more hygienic and more pleasant. The new containers were introduced by Michael Kern from the Witzenhausen Institute and by the head of the waste management office, Martin Fetscher.

Additional incentives could be created by small welcome packages for new subscribers. For example, these packages could include free paper collecting bags. To support this proposal, each district council received a parcel with organic waste bags to illustrate the benefits of the biotone.

In the discussion about the changes to the fee, it became clear that a 60-liter biotone could drop from currently 67.40 euros to EUR 42.40 per year, provided that the proposed measures are decided by the district council.

The current waste record

Against the background of these proposals, Fetscher explained the recent waste statistics. While the total house waste has increased slightly, organic waste has decreased since 2020, about 44 kilograms per person and year, which is ten kilos below the national average. "It is no less organic waste, he is only secretly in household waste," the experts believe.

The quality of the bio-waste in the Black Forest Baar district is considered "very good", since only 1.2 percent foreign substances are contained. This shows that waste separation in the region is already effective. The expert Kern also reported on the possible uses of artificial intelligence (AI) to examine organic waste for contamination.

According to current estimates, around 30 percent of the household waste that actually belongs to the bio bin will end up in the residual waste. The district administration recognizes an opportunity for optimization, since many households either do not know what belongs to the biotonne or opt for your own composting. Currently, 28 percent of households have their own bio bin, while another 40 percent share the container with neighbors.

Above all, the discussion about the newly established ton models caused lively debates. It was originally planned to offer the new models for an additional charge. But some district councils are committed to distributing them to the citizens without additional costs. The idea of making the citizens tasty through low fees and appealing containers seem to be a central goal.

On the other hand, some suggestions for creating stricter conditions were rejected for the self -composting. The technical committee has decided to submit a report on the measures implemented so far in the first half of 2025. The development of biotoma use will remain an important topic for waste management in the district in the coming years.
