Traffic chaos in Spaichingen: bypass should bring relief!
Traffic chaos in Spaichingen: bypass should bring relief!
Every day over 70,000 vehicles roll through the small towns of Spaichingen and Balgheim! A frightening number that was determined in 2019 in a comprehensive measurement. The through traffic, which leads from Rottweil to Tuttlingen, only makes up a small part of the overall traffic with almost 8,000 vehicles. Inland traffic and the source target traffic, which heavily burden the region, add up over 42,000 vehicles!
The forecasts are alarming: By 2035, light traffic is expected by 6 % and heavy traffic by 18 %. The traffic chaos seems preprogrammed! In order to counteract this homemade problem, the Freiburg regional council is planning a bypass that is supposed to redirect through traffic and parts of the inner -city traffic onto a new route.
The plans for the bypass
Three variants are available: the western bypass, the east bypass and the route close to the board. But the decision has not yet been made, although the preliminary planning has been running since summer 2019. Matthias Henrich, press spokesman for the RP, explains that the interdisciplinary variant comparison will take some time. The evaluation of noise and air pollution as well as feasibility studies for possible tunnels are still underway.
The first cost estimate from 2014 put the bypass to around 26 million euros. But construction prices have changed drastically since then. Current estimates indicate that the costs for the eastern bypass could be between 40 and 60 million euros, while the route close to the board with tunnels could even cost 90 to 100 million euros!
The variants are promising, but the planning is delayed by the large number of other projects and the limited personnel resources of the state road construction management. It remains to be seen which solution is ultimately chosen to solve the traffic problems in Spaichingen and Balgheim!
