Autumn garden care: How to protect yourself from the tiger mosquito!
Villingen-Schwenningen, Deutschland - The autumn time is not only for gardening, but also for preparing for the Asian tiger mosquito! While garden owners make their gardens winter -proof and do the last work, the Rottweiler Health Department warns of the uninvited guests. Although the mosquito season is coming to an end, the tiger mosquitoes made up for 2025 and left their eggs in protected places. When spring comes, the next generation will slip!
"Our district is still free of tiger mosquitos," emphasizes Nina Neißner from the Health Department. But the Asian tiger mosquito is a survival artist! It lays cold and dry-resistant eggs that can even survive the winter in Central Europe. Where are these little beasts hide? According to the State Health Office, you will find your breeding grounds in water residues - be it in flower vases, buckets or rain barrels. The tiny eggs are hardly visible, but with a little scrub they can be effectively removed.
scrubbing is the a and o!
To prevent the mosquito plague next year, there are simple tips: "Pay attention to all vessels, from the bucket to the flower vase," advises Neißner. Unnecessary vessels should be stowed away after thorough cleaning. Bird drinks and rain barrels have to be scrubbed with a brush or rinsed with hot water over 60 degrees. In this way, the eggs are removed and permanently damaged!
But why all the effort? The stitch of the tiger mosquito is considered to be relatively harmless, usually it remains with redness and itching. But be careful! These mosquitoes can transmit dangerous viruses such as dengue or chikungunya. At the moment, the health authorities rate the risk in Germany as low because the right conditions for a transfer are still missing. Nevertheless: the danger should not be underestimated and the preparations should be taken seriously!
