Roman secrets: Heilbronn discovers ancient long -distance road and temple!
Neckargartach, Heilbronn, Deutschland - in Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg, archaeologists made significant finds from Roman times. The rescue excavations in the Neckargartach district, carried out by Archaeoconnect GmbH under the supervision of the State Office for Monument Protection (LAD), led to the discovery of a 500 -meter -long Roman long -distance road. This road, which is preserved, runs from the south to north and has a width of 14 meters. It connects the castle places of the Neckarlime in Böckingen and Wimpfen, which are about ten kilometers apart, such as rp.baden-wuertttemberg.de reported.
The excavations took place between May 2023 and September 2024 and the goal of examining the remains of a Roman estate. In addition to the Fernstraße, the researchers came across various Roman buildings, including half -timbered buildings and stone base. The building finds indicate that it is a Vicus, a civilian Roman street village. This site could have served as a rest station as well as a small trading center and the craftsmanship. Further finds include pits, a grain carre, an oven and five fountains for water supply. According to Fr.a>, three burials were found on the roadside, which do not belong to a regular cemetery in two finds Roman Schuhnails were discovered.
finds of the Mercury Temple and other discoveries
An important aspect of the discoveries is the nearby Merkur temple. Remains of a statue of God Mercury were found in one of the stone buildings. The statue is characteristic through a wing hood that makes God recognizable. Another fragment shows a hand with a wallet, which is typical of Mercury, which is worshiped as the god the dealer and thieves - identical to the Greek Hermes.
Overall, this is the first long section of the street including the associated structures, which was examined in Baden-Württemberg. The street and the finds indicate the importance of the traffic route in the military and later civil context. Unusual stone point foundations along the street still have unexplained functions. The exact time of use of the Vicus is determined after evaluating the find material, indicating that the settlement has been cleared and the lack of fire layers can be inferred.
