Kretschmann optimistic: Wind power expansion in BW should finally make progress!

The expansion of wind power in Baden-Württemberg is keeping those responsible in suspense. Despite the optimism of Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann, who firmly believes in progress, the numbers are disappointing. By the beginning of December 2023, only eight new wind turbines had been put into operation, compared to 16 in the previous year. “We have done our homework,” emphasizes Kretschmann, pointing to 164 systems that have already been approved, with a further 179 in the pipeline. One bright spot is the drastic reduction in approval times from seven years to just seven months bnn.de reported.

In the coalition agreement, the state government has set the goal of installing a total of 1,000 new wind turbines by 2030. Although Kretschmann questioned the goal of 100 new plants by 2024 at the beginning of the year, the pressure remains growing. At the same time, the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) sets ambitious goals that aim to expand wind power to 115 gigawatts by 2030. This means that around 9 gigawatts gross must be installed every year, while old systems with 17 gigawatts will be dismantled by then Umweltbundesamt.de informed.

Challenges of expansion

A central problem remains the provision of sufficient space for wind turbines. The new Wind Energy Area Requirements Act obliges the federal states to designate the corresponding areas by the end of 2027 and 2032 in order to achieve the desired expansion goals. These legal requirements are crucial to driving forward the expansion of wind power. Despite technical advances to reduce noise and light emissions, wind energy still faces challenges such as minimizing disruption to people and nature.

The government is committed to the rapid implementation of these projects in order to achieve the goals set and pave the way for a sustainable energy future. The coming months will be crucial for the advancement of wind power in Baden-Württemberg and beyond.
