Switzerland pays 50 million: Electrification of the high Rhine route comes!
Laufenburg, Deutschland - Deutsche Bahn plans to initiate significant modernization and electrification of the high Rhine route. This work should begin in the third or fourth quarter of 2025 and be completed by the end of 2027. The aim is to electrically operate the trains on this important connection between Basel and Constance, which is a more environmentally friendly and efficient variant of rail traffic.
The measures are comprehensive: 75 kilometers of the route are equipped with an electrical overhead line, and 18 stops are converted in barrier -free. Three stops are now being built in Warmbach, Wallbach and Waldshut-West, while the tunnels of Laufenburg and Waldshut-Tiengen tracks are laid and three bridges are rebuilt. This represents an important step towards a modern rail infrastructure.
important steps for the planning approval decision
A planning approval decision is required for comprehensive construction work, which must be granted for the German sections of the German Railway sections. Deutsche Bahn expects to receive this important document by the end of 2024. The documents for the last of three German sections of the route are currently submitted. The Federal Office of Transport is responsible on the Swiss side; There is already a planning permit for the section near Erzingen that has been available since June.
The assessment procedures on both sides of the border are complex and time -consuming. The complexity of the building permits ensures that the schedules can change. Originally, Deutsche Bahn assumed that all permits can be granted by mid -2024, but this is now being challenging.
Financial support from Switzerland
An important aspect of the project is the financial participation of Switzerland in the costs. In total, investments amount to over 430 million euros, with the federal government paying three quarters of these costs. The remaining means share the countries, the districts of Waldshut and Lörrach as well as the communities along the route. An important amount of over 50 million euros comes from Switzerland, since the Hochrheinbahn also connects the two cantonal capitals Basel and Schaffhausen.
The commissioning of the electrical trains should take place at the end of 2027 with the timetable change. This not only increases the travel speed, but also significantly reduces the environmental impact, since the diesel locomotives on this route will belong to the past. The Hochrhein-Bodensee-Express will expand the passenger offer as an additional access requirement and improve the connection between Germany and Switzerland.
Deutsche Bahn is now working to coordinate the processes in such a way that disorders for passengers can be minimized during construction work. These modernization measures are part of a larger initiative to make rail traffic in Germany and the neighboring countries future -proof and should help increase the proportion of environmentally friendly traffic.
