Roman secrets: Heilbronn discovers ancient long -distance road and Merkurtempel!

In the Neckargartach district in Heilbronn, important archaeological finds were made during rescue excavations. A 500 meter long Roman long -distance road and several buildings were discovered after extensive excavations were carried out in the course of the construction of the International Campus for Artificial Intelligence. This road runs through the excavation area from the south to north over a length of 500 meters and is about 14 meters wide. It connected the castle places of the Neckarlime in Böckingen and Wimpfen.

The excavations carried out by Archaeoconnect GmbH in cooperation with the State Office for Monument Preservation (LAD) took place between May 2023 and September 2024. The aim was to locate a Roman manor. However, the results show that the place probably served as a rest station, trading center and craftsmanship. Among the discoveries are half -timbered buildings, stone base, an oven, a grain car and five fountains for water supply.

finds of remarkable importance

The parts of a Mercury statue that were found in one of the stone buildings are particularly striking. The head of the statue is recognizable by the wing hood, which represents the god Mercury. In addition, there are fragments that show a hand with a wallet, which is also typical for this God. These discoveries indicate the importance of the trunk road in the military and later civil context, while the location of the Merkurtempel on the street underlines this topic.

The building finds indicate an unknown Vicus (Roman Straßendorf), not to a manor. Unusual stone point foundations on the street still have unexplained functions, while the lack of fire layers in the basements could indicate an orderly evacuation of the settlement. Nearby were four burials from the 4th/5th Century discovered that indicate a later settlement.

The excavation results are to be classified as outstanding, as this is the first examination of such a long section of the street including the associated structures in Baden-Württemberg. The “Steinäcker” won already indicated Roman remains, and now the findings on the finds are pending.
