U17 submarine opens in the Sinsheim Museum: an adventure for everyone!

Sinsheim, Deutschland - The Marine submarine U17 will be open to the public in the Technik Museum Sinsheim from early summer 2025. This almost 50 meter long submarine was transported by Speyer to Sinsheim in the summer of 2024, a process that included both water and land paths. The transport required the blocking of some parts of the route, including the A6. The submarine is currently in a parking space in front of the museum and the preparations are underway to give visitors access.

These preparations include the removal of transport reinforcement straps and the welding of supports. Visitors can get into the submarine via a bridge, which is modeled on the submarines. In order to prevent vandalism, the interior of the submarine is prepared by securing the lever and buttons. In addition, ventilation and a fire alarm system must be installed while the submarine is connected to the power grid. Multimedia elements are also integrated to offer an authentic experience, including original noises, lighting and monitors.

tour of the submarine

Visitors will have the opportunity to visit different areas of the submarine, such as the bridge, the machine room, the combination, the shower and sleeping places. However, some restrictions have to be observed for the inspection: the passage in the submarine is sometimes only 80 to 100 centimeters wide and the passage height is about 160 centimeters. Former occupation members will offer guided tours through the submarine. This submarine was in use from 1973 to 2010 and had its location in Eckernförde. The loan agreement with the technology museums Sinsheim Speyer was concluded after talks with the Federal Ministry of Defense and the Bundeswehr, and the project costs amount to around two million euros, which are mainly financed by donations.

In addition, a 90 meter long and 10 meter high heavy load transport is demonstrated in July 2024, as U17 Technik Museum reports. The transport route leads from the Technik Museum Speyer across the Rhine and Neckar, past Heidelberg, and further over the country to Haßmersheim, Eberbach and Bad Rappenau to the technology Museum Sinsheim. A first attempt to turn the submarine has already been successfully carried out, although there were initially difficulties. The turning is tested on the pontoon of a drawer next to the old bridge in Heidelberg. After turning, the submarine is driven under the bridge and then erected again. The event is announced as a spectacle for young and old, with further details on the event being announced at the end of March.
