Heidelberg Materials starts Gezero: Revolutionary CO2 memory in NRW!
Geseke, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Deutschland - A revolutionary project takes shape! Heidelberg Materials heralded the crucial technical planning phase for the first large -scale system for CO2 separation and storage in Germany, GEZERO. This innovative initiative will be realized in Geseke, North Rhine-Westphalia and is intended to intercept 700,000 tons of CO2 annually by 2029. The contract with the renowned engineering firm Fluor Corporation is under the roof and subject, and the preparations for the front-end engineering design (feed study) are in full swing!
Christian Knell, spokesman for Heidelberg Materials Germany, emphasizes the pioneering work, which is done with Gezero: "A good and methodological preparation is crucial for large -scale projects of this kind." The feed study will not only include the design, but also the integration of different systems, including a CO2 transport solution, which is to take place for the time being by train. This is an important step for the necessary pipeline infrastructure. In addition, a local CO2 memory hub will be created as an intermediate storage to maximize the efficiency of the project.
technological innovation and sustainability
The heart of Gezero is the state-of-the-art oxyfuel technology, which is used in combination with a CO2 cleaning and liquefied system. The entire electrical energy requirement of the system is covered by renewable energies, supported by a new photovoltaic system on the factory premises. GEZERO is also funded by the EU innovation fund, which aims at projects that promise significant emission reductions and create European added value.
Technical planning should be completed in the coming spring, followed by the construction phase that is scheduled for 2026. With GEZERO, Heidelberg Materials sets a strong sign in the fight against climate change and shows that innovative solutions for CO2 reduction in Germany are possible!
