Three talents for science journalism: KTS promotes DJS students

In an exciting step for science journalism in Germany, three new “depth” talents at the German journalist school (DJS) received their support from the Klaus Tschira Foundation. Corin Baurmann, Aileen Bunte and Mia Mertens are the chosen ones who want to raise their skills in the field of knowledge journalism to a new level in the seventh year of this important cooperation. With their extensive expertise in computer science, data science, business administration, clinical psychology and cognitive neurosciences, they are ready to present the world of science in an understandable and exciting way.

Corin Baurmann, a computer science student at the Free University of Berlin, has already gained journalistic experiences in the data editorial team of the daily mirror. He is passionate about more transparency in data journalism and emphasizes the importance of how data influence our decisions. "It is incredibly important that data journalism makes these processes visible and understandable for the public," he explains. Aileen Bunte, who previously worked as a data scientist in the sustainable finance industry, would like to illuminate the challenges of biodiversity and its economic effects. "There are currently only a few ways to quantify the influence of a company on species extinction," she says and sees great potential in EU specifications and the growing pressure on companies.

The talents in detail

mia Mertens, which is also part of the DJS compact class, has a master's degree in psychology and brings its expertise from various media projects. "In a world that is becoming increasingly complex, it is crucial that people can understand science and trust their trust," she emphasizes. Your goal is to make psychological knowledge accessible to a wider audience and to promote critical thinking.

The "BLED" program of the Klaus Tschira Foundation not only offers financial support, but also a mentoring program and internships in science editorial offices for journalist students who studied a MINT subject. The Klaus Tschira Foundation itself, founded by the physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira, is committed to promoting natural sciences, mathematics and computer science and would like to strengthen the appreciation for these subjects in society.
