125 years of ASC Strasbourg: A look at the moving club history!
Heidelberg, Deutschland - A spectacular anniversary is celebrated: 125 years of USC Heidelberg and ASC Strasbourg! The history of this association is a fascinating time beam that leads through the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and the "Third Reich", right up to today's reunited Federal Republic of Germany. This eventful past has significantly shaped the development of ASC Strasbourg into the USC Heidelberg.
The Academic Sports Club (ASC) Strasbourg was founded on November 18, 1899 and was a German association that was closely linked to the Kaiser Wilhelm University. From the beginning, the club offered a variety of sports, including hockey, tennis and later ice hockey and football. The ASC quickly became the center of German and international tennis and celebrated the win of the German Hockey championship in 1909. But after the First World War, the history of ASC Strasbourg, which was renamed "Sporting Club" and still exists.
The foundation of the USC Heidelberg
on March 2, 1919, in the presence of the rector of the university, the “ASC Heidelberg (Strasbourg)” was founded. This new foundation was the result of personal connections between the former Strasburger to the city of Heidelberg. The association continued the tradition of its predecessor and also opened for female members. A new era began with the use of the TSG 78 Heidelberg sports facilities and the rental of tennis courts. Sportsproof and external competitions were held regularly, but the dark shadows of the Nazi regime led to the dissolution of the association.
On November 18, 1949, the "University Sport Club Heidelberg (ASC Strasbourg)" was launched to emphasize the connection to the university and the old ASC Strasbourg. The USC quickly developed into a top club in basketball and celebrated numerous successes, including several German championships. But the 1970s brought a slow decline when the connection to the university became weaker and there were no financial means. Despite all the challenges, the USC remains an important player in German basketball, with a strong focus on youth work and an impressive team of 25 teams in the coming season.
