Heidenreich, known for his elegant style of play, was not only an outstanding Libero, but also a key player in one of the most successful phases of SC Freiburg. The club remembered him as a "big footballer" who spent the last weeks of his life in Waldkirch. Maximilian Heidenreich started his professional career at Hannover 96 in the 1980s and managed to climb the first team at the age of 17. His talent led to an ascent to the Bundesliga, and after stations at 1860 Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt he came to SC Freiburg in 1992. Heidenreich shone under coach Volker Finke in the Libero position and contributed significantly to the promotion of the association to the Bundesliga. During his time near Freiburg he played 173 competitive games and left a lasting impression.
After five years in Freiburg, Heidenreich moved to VfL Wolfsburg in 1997 and finally ended his active career at Wattenscheid. Even after his player career, he remained true to football and worked as a coach in various amateur clubs.
