Dramatic fire extinguishing: Hütte on Calwer Horsehof burns down

In the night of October 2, there was a dramatic incident in Calw-Oberriedt: a hut was burned in a horse farm. The fire brigade was alerted at 1:14 a.m., and within a short time there were 65 emergency services from the surrounding places such as Calw, Altburg, Stammheim and Schömberg with twelve vehicles on the way to the site. The fire quickly reached around, and the firefighters had to face a variety of challenges.

The hut, which was in the immediate vicinity of the forest, had been described as 20 x 20 meters tall by the emergency services. At the beginning of the mission, the firefighters were able to lay several hundred meters of hose lines from the local edge of Altburg and from the center of Oberriedt in order to have sufficient extinguishing water. The owner of the hut was also on site and informed the city fire chief of Calw, Marcus Frank, about the fact that there were large quantities of straw and hay in the hut.

extinguishing work and support from the THW

Surprisingly, it turned out that the pressed round bales were a considerable risk. In order to cope with the situation, the decision was made to consult the Technical Relief Agency (THW). The local associations from Calw, Pforzheim and Böblingen were requested to support the burning round bales. This was necessary to rule out potential embers and to be able to make the extinguishing work more effectively.

In the meantime, the firefighters were on several fronts to extinguish the fire. Depending on the distance to the fire site, they use respiratory protection or FFP2 masks, since it could not be excluded that asbestos was available in the burning hut. Security had top priority on this dramatic evening.

In addition, nine rescue workers and two vehicles from the German Red Cross helped on site in order to be able to provide first aid in an emergency. After the intensive extinguishing work that dragged on until the early hours of the morning, the cause of the fire was examined by the police. It was found that an arson cannot be excluded, especially since the hut, according to the owner, neither had a power connection nor technical equipment.

The events of this nightly commitment show the challenges and determination of the fire brigade and supportive forces. These efforts became clear during the entire mission, and the quick reaction of the helpers could have contributed significantly to prevent an even greater disaster.
