Lightning in Berlin and Brandenburg: decline despite the weather!
In 2024, fewer flashes were registered in Berlin and Brandenburg than usual. According to the flash location company Nowcast, there were 132,000 flashes in Brandenburg with a current of at least 5 ka. This represents a decline of around 6 percent compared to the ten-year fund (2014-2023). 3,500 flashes were recorded in Berlin, which corresponds to around 20 percent less than in the ten-year average.
Brandenburg occupies 5th place in the flash number in the nationwide comparison. Bavaria leads the statistics with 357,000 lightningloads and an increase of 15 percent, followed by Lower Saxony with 223,000 and Baden-Württemberg with 163,000 flashing. It is particularly striking that Berlin is in the penultimate place in the lightning ranking in front of Bremen.
