Amazon withdraws from Zweibrücken - 200 jobs in danger!

Amazon stopped operating his distribution center in the industrial area near Zweibrücken on January 8, 2025. Most recently, around 200 people were employed there, who were mostly hired as students. According to information from Merkur, the hall was temporarily used to relieve the logistics centers in the southwest during the Christmas business. The hall is located in the industrial area at the Steitzhof above Contwig and has a length of 340 meters and a width of 150 meters, as reported by the Rheinpfalz.

The use of the warehouse near Zweibrücken Airport began at the end of 2024, and the hall was completed in October 2023. Amazon operated the center for redistribution of packages, not for storage. The employees were transported to the hall with free buses from Zweibrücken and Pirmasens and received the Germany ticket. The contracts of the employees were limited because the temporary character of the facility was known from the start. With the closure of the center it is unclear what will happen to the hall and whether Amazon will come back in the future.

Logistics projects in upheaval

Amazon continues to expand in Germany and plans to expand its network at logistics and distribution centers. According to Merkur, the construction work of a new logistics center for Mercedes-Benz in the Rastatt district began in April 2024, which is due to create 500 jobs and will go into operation in the second quarter of 2025. These developments are part of the efforts to optimize the logistics capacities in southwestern Germany, where other logistics centers in Frankenthal, Kaiserslautern and Koblenz store packages from the area between Stuttgart and Munich.
