ÖVP with a failed deportation policy: a political deception?

In a heated debate about the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, there are clear contradictions in Austrian and German politics. The FPÖ, represented by the foreign policy and constitutional spokeswoman NABG. Dr. Susanne Fürst, describes the returns announced by the ÖVP as a "voter deception". According to the government officials, these repatriations may be carried out quickly, but both the EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner and the director of the Federal Office for Foreign Affairs and Asylum, Gernot Mair, expressed significant concerns about the "volatile situation" in Syria. In the interview, Mair made it clear that a return was not possible until there was a Syrian government that respect human rights. This contradicts the demands of Interior Minister Karl Nehammer and illustrates that there is currently no real willingness to return, such as OTV made clear.

In Germany, on the other hand, the debate about the return of Syrian refugees also records speed. In particular, the CSU calls for a clear return plan for refugees from the Federal Government, while Chancellor Olaf Scholz classifies the situation as too "dangerous". Migration expert Daniel Thym emphasizes that the new situation in Syria could have dramatic consequences for refugee status, but a comprehensive return cannot be implemented for practical reasons. In Germany, over 970,000 Syrian refugees are currently registered, the legal status of which must now be checked in more detail. Thym found that around 47,000 asylum applications from Syrian refugees are currently on ice and that the authorities do not see themselves able to process them all quickly, which implies the need for a differentiated view of individual cases. This illustrates the challenges that politics faces, and is discussed in detail in a recent report by ZDF
