FPÖ accuses ÖVP of bizarre show - the government crisis is heading!
Villach, Österreich - On March 29, 2025, FPÖ general secretary Christian Hafenecker made a decisive statement about the federal party conference of the ÖVP. He described the meeting as a "bizarre show" in which two chancellors were present on the stage that were not elected. According to Hafenecker, the ÖVP continues with its policies "wealth destruction, treason neutrality, illegal mass immigration and climate communism" and continues an "anti-Austria policy". He also criticized the dishonesty of the ÖVP in her negotiations and accused her of acting in Hinterzimmer to stay in power.
Hafenecker emphasized that FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl does not want to become Chancellor at all costs and that he was more concerned with the concerns of the population. He realizes that the current government is the most expensive in the history of Austria and is held together by the fear of the voters. The founding fathers of the ÖVP would turn around in the grave, according to Hafenecker, while he commented on Christian Stocker's recent election result by predicting that it would be the first and last choice to win the podium.
coalition negotiations and political uncertainty
According to the turbulent coalition negotiations that started after the National Council election in September 2023, Austria has been without a functioning government for over four months. The FPÖ achieved the most mandates with 28.8% of the votes, followed by the ÖVP with 26.3%. Despite these successes, the efforts for a stable government have failed due to failed discussions between the FPÖ and the ÖVP. At a meeting with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, Kickl announced the final demolition of the negotiations.
The Federal Government is now under pressure by Van der Bellen to initiate new negotiations. Different options could be considered, including new elections or a minority government. The ÖVP and the SPÖ have already resumed their conversations about a possible coalition, but it remains open to what extent these conversations will be successful. An already intended coalition would only have formed a narrow majority of a seat in the National Council.
social and security policy challenges
In addition to the political turbulence, a violent incident in Villach, in which a person died and several injured, has heated up the debate about a sharper course in asylum and refugee policy. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner reacted to this incident with the announcement of "massive random control", in the context of which the FPÖ had already made earlier agreements with the ÖVP for the social and political restriction of the refugee recording. The roadmap for a future government remains characterized by the possibility of balanced budget plans required by the EU. The persistent uncertainty means that some partners already warn of Austria's possible exclusions from international cooperation should the FPÖ continue to influence security -political institutions.
Some of the central challenges for the coming months will be to get the social tensions and political differences under control, while a sustainable government perspective must be developed at the same time. This situation is strongly observed by the FPÖ because its positioning is decisive in both national and European politics. The upcoming negotiations will therefore be of significant importance not only for the parties themselves, but also for the entire society.
