ÖVP realignment: Christian Stocker becomes the new chancellor!

Today the ÖVP is taking the final steps towards forming a new “sugar coalition”. At a press conference led by the new party leader Christian Stocker, crucial personnel details were announced that set the course for the future government. At the center of this transformation is the confirmation of Stocker as the new chancellor. With him, Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer will be appointed Economics Minister, while Claudia Plakolm will take over the department for family, youth, EU and integration. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner remain in their positions. Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig will also remain in office. The personnel decisions followed a meeting of the federal party executive committee, which took place this morning to clarify the final details of how the crown reported.

The outgoing Chancellor Karl Nehammer recently announced his resignation and handed over the leadership of the People's Party to Christian Stocker, who previously served as General Secretary. In his first statement as party leader, Stocker expressed the ÖVP's willingness to seek talks about coalition negotiations with the FPÖ, which is remarkable given his previous critical statements about the Freedom Party. A clear about-face after Stocker had previously violently attacked the FPÖ and its chairman Herbert Kickl in a press statement. Nehammer also informed Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen about developments within the party.
