Austria's triple coalition: a compromise with great goals!
St. Pölten, Österreich - Austria has taken a crucial step with the formation of a new government. The three parties Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) and NEOS are merging in a triple coalition that has already been known as a "Sucker Coalition". Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen sworn in the new ministers and state secretaries in the morning, with the ÖVP taking over the Chancellery under the leadership of Christian Stocker, while Andreas Babler was appointed vice -chancellor by the SPÖ, such as Br.de reported
The new cabinet has a total of 13 ministers and seven state secretaries, which is the largest number of in Austrian history. The negotiations were lengthy, especially after the elections in September 2024, in which the ÖVP and SPÖ, despite their joint efforts, were initially unable to find a mutual solution. After tests with the Freedom Party (FPÖ) failed, a compromise could finally be achieved, which also takes into account the constraint. For 2024, Austria's public debt is to be kept at around 387.2 billion euros, such as Noen.at reports.
government priorities and reforms
The government program aims to avoid an EU's debt -related deficit procedure, and savings of 6.3 billion euros are to be achieved this year. Reforms in the area of asylum and migration are also planned within the coalition, including a ban on headscarves for under-14 years of year and a suspension of family reunification. The program also provides measures to combat extremism, with the newly elected Neos chairman Betina Meinl-Reisinger places a special focus on education systems that should include the promotion of quality media for young people.
