New Council of Ministers is imminent: Who will be a minister in Austria?

Progress is noticeably gaining momentum in the political negotiations to form a new three-party coalition in Austria. The discussions between the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS are currently very intensive, but the exact content is currently being kept secret. It is expected that the joint government program will be finalized by the middle of this week and that the specific presentation date will be set for Wednesday or Thursday. A possible inauguration of the new ministerial team could then take place on Monday, March 3rd, provided that the members of the NEOS give their consent the day before, while the other parties only need the blessing of their committees, like the Small newspaper reported.

Ministerial distribution is imminent

While the details of the coalition program are still being clarified, the distribution of ministries appears to be well advanced. The ÖVP has named Christian Stocker as the future chancellor, while Gerhard Karner (interior affairs), Klaudia Tanner (defense) and Norbert Totschnig (agriculture) are expected to keep their positions. Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer and the Styrian regional councilor Barbara Eibinger-Miedl are up for discussion for the Ministry of Economic Affairs, while Claudia Plakolm has a good chance of taking over the youth and family agendas as Chancellery Minister. In the SPÖ, the designated Vice Chancellor Babler and Sven Hergovich are considered favorites for the infrastructure ministry, accompanied by Korinna Schumann and Eva-Maria Holzleitner as candidates for the social and women's ministries. In addition, the SPÖ is also expected to take over the finance ministry, although the exact candidates are still unclear. The NEOS could already be awarded two ministries, most likely the foreign and education ministries, with party leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger and Vienna's deputy mayor Christoph Wiederkehr coming into play ORF Vienna reported.
