Netanyahu increases pressure on Hamas: hostage -taking as a sample!
Gazastreifen, Palästina - Israel's head of government Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened Hamas with increased military pressure in the Gaza Strip if the remaining hostages are not released. During a speech in parliament, Netanyahu emphasized that the Israeli measures could also include the possibility of taking areas. His defense minister Israel Katz had previously indicated that the annexation of areas in the Gaza Strip was an option if Hamas continues to hold hostages. There are currently 58 hostages in the violence of Hamas, which in turn warns that Israeli attempts to free the hostages by violence, whose lives could endanger.
The Hamas also explained that they were doing everything in their power to ensure the security of the hostages, while at the same time warning Israel not to continue the attacks in the Gaza Strip. This aggressive rhetoric comes after Israel has resumed its air raids on Hamas goals. It is the first military advance since the end of a ceasefire on January 19. Last Wednesday, the Israeli army also started a new ground use in the Gaza Strip to put pressure on the Hamas.
military escalation in the Gaza Strip
The resumption of the fighting already has fatal consequences: According to the health authority in the Gaza Strip controlled by the Hamas, at least 830 people have been killed since the beginning of the attacks, a number that cannot be verified from an independent side. This situation forms the background for the criticism of Israel's criticism, which aim to destroy the military capacities of Hamas and to free the hostages.
The conflict has its roots far back. On October 7, 2023, one of the bloodiest incidents have occurred in years when the Hamas committed atrocities, in which around 1,200 people were killed and about 250 were delayed as hostages into the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government reacted to the action by trying to limit Hamas' military possibilities. Nevertheless, Israel's military successes are limited. 14,000 Hamas fighters were killed by May 2024, but Hamas continued to maintain attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians.
Humanitarian crisis and geopolitical dimensions
The humanitarian location in the Gaza Strip is now catastrophic. Around 1.7 million people became domestic refugees, and many areas have become uninhabitable due to the ongoing bombing. The violence and destruction also refer to the collective trauma, which exists on the part of the Palestinians and Israelis. Palestinians often consider the conflict through the lens of "Nakba", the flight and expulsion of 700,000 of its compatriots in 1948.
The international community, the USA and the EU, is now trying to de -escalate the conflict and to provide humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip. However, permanent peace remains a long way off, since the Oslo process is considered failed. The historical rivalry between Israelis and Palestinians, which goes back to the 19th century, is only reinforced by the current military conflicts.
Despite all efforts to have a two-state solution, the conflict remains territorially and ethno-national, with competing demands on the same area. Even if there are always attempts to promote peace, the pro -Russian and Iranian support structures of the Hamas and Hisbollah are shown as power factors that continue to complicate the situation.
Where the region will develop is uncertain. The current military confrontation only seems to stir up the tensions, while the civilian population of the Palestinians and Israelis suffers from the consequences. It remains to be hoped that a peaceful resolution can be achieved soon to improve the intolerable humanitarian conditions.
