Coalition talks: Who will be the next head of government in Austria?
The coalition negotiations in Austria are reaching a critical point. On Monday, December 9, 2024, top politicians met for talks with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen in the Hofburg. The focus was on the crucial questions regarding the formation of a new government team. So reported Small newspaper that the talks are part of a regular exchange on the progress of the negotiations. Two weeks ago, the three main negotiators met again in the presidential office to discuss contentious points.
Negotiators in intensive exchange
The mood among the negotiators seems optimistic. A red negotiator emphasized that everyone involved was trying very hard to work constructively on an agreement. But the schedule remains uncertain. A NEOS representative expressed concerns that an agreement could be expected before Christmas, as negotiations between the parties could take longer than initially expected. This reflects the course of the coalition talks in 2019, when movement between the parties took a lot of time.
The dates were also set on Monday: Herbert Kickl from the FPÖ will meet with Van der Bellen at 1:30 p.m., followed by Karl Nehammer from the ÖVP at 3:00 p.m. and Andreas Babler from the SPÖ at 4:30 p.m. The negotiations are more than just a political chess game; they are crucial for the future formation of a government. Ö24 reported that Kickl's talks with Nehammer and Babler have not yet been successful and that it is therefore all the more important to push these negotiations forward.
