Bilingual classes in Carinthia: Rescue by state funds secured!

Klagenfurt, Österreich - The bilingual lessons in the Carinthian elementary schools are about to turn! At first it was said that the bilingual classes in the Khevenhüller School in Villach and the Körnerschule in Klagenfurt were in danger due to a drastic savings package in the state and the federal government. Despite the initial uncertainty, there is now clear progress: The educational officer Daniel Fellner (SPÖ) announced that the financing by the country was ensured so that the classes can be continued in the coming school year, as reported ORF .

In the name of planning security, it is important for parents and educational institutions to know that a bilingual first class can be offered in both schools for the school year 2025/2026. This is guaranteed by financial support from the country of around 250,000 euros. Fellner emphasized the importance of multilingualism for future generations and promised to also strive for a longer, nationwide solution as soon as a new federal government is established. There has already been a strong movement from parenthood, which mobilized with over 880 signatures against the suspension of bilingual lessons, such as 5min.at reported.

Despite the positive view, the uncertainty remains where future financing will come from. The bilingual lessons were originally an experiment that was financed by the country and the federal government. However, the current savings represent a challenge that poses great questions for both schools and parents. Thus, the agreement for the continuation of the bilingual classes is an important step for education in Carinthia.
