Zittau/Görlitz: University lowers targets to 3,000 students by 2028
Görlitz, Deutschland - The Zittau/Görlitz University (HSZG) recently signed a new target agreement with the Free State of Saxony, which is valid until 2028. According to the latest information, that of Sächsische.de the target brand for the number of enrolled students is reduced to 3,000. This represents a decline from the originally intended number of 3,200. Rector Prof. Alexander Kratzsch nevertheless describes the new requirements as "ambitious goals" and emphasizes that the university thus gains planning security. In the presence period between 2021 and 2024, the budget was around 1.57 million euros for 2022, and in the future it could be around 7.32 million euros that will be available in the next four years.
Financial strengthening for Saxony's universities
On December 11, 2024, Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow signed new target agreements with Saxon universities, which are supported with over 200 million euros by 2028, such as Bildungungsklick.de reported. These agreements aim to secure quality in teaching and research and to give the universities the flexibility in order to expand their specific strengths. A central element of these agreements is to ensure the so -called "small subjects" and to maintain the number of around 100,000 students for future specialists training.
Another focus is on the promotion of innovation and the sustainable ensuring of employment at universities. These measures are not only important for the universities themselves, but also for the entire science landscape in the Free State, which gives a clear direction through the new regulations. Gemkow optimistically commented: "Together we set signs that will work far beyond the next few years." The HSZG and the other educational institutions open this new financial support for promising perspectives for the coming years.
