Why women are addicted to True Crime: A look behind the motifs!

The fascination for true crimes is increasing, and the latest knowledge of a study by the University of Graz confirms the deep connection of many women to this genre. In an online survey with around 600 participants, 75 percent stated that they wanted to understand the psychology of terrible acts. The average true crime consumption in women was around seven hours a week, while men only spend four hours with it. These figures illustrate the great interest that women have in particular in crime stories, which already underpin earlier studies in the Anglo-American region, as reported.

defensive vigilance and emotional preparation

But why are it especially women who deal intensively with True Crime? According to project manager Corinna Perchtold-Stefan, a decisive factor could be the "defensive vigilance"-the need to prepare for any threatening situations in your own life. In this way you gain the feeling of control over your security. The study shows that 70 percent of the respondents want to understand the motifs of the perpetrators, which suggests a higher level of empathy. Many women consider dealing with True Crime as a kind of emotional training that helps them to better cope in everyday situations, also report the colleagues from mdr .

In addition, the researchers observed by brain scans of 130 true crime fans that they have a particularly large number of connections in regions associated with learning and understanding complex topics. These results could indicate that true crime fans have a higher ability to deal with stress and fear. Even if the first results are promising, Perchtold-Stefan announced that further research is required to comprehensive the relationships between true crime consumption, psychology and feeling of security. The project is the first large -scale empirical study on the importance and influence of True Crime on society.
