Part -time trap: More and more women in Austria affected!

Vienna, Österreich - Part -time employment in Austria has experienced a remarkable increase. According to a current study by Statistics Austria, the number of part -time employees increased to over 1.25 million. This number comprises 986,000 women and 261,000 men, which makes part -time the most widespread atypical form of employment. Overall, the number of atypical employment relationships has increased by 26.6 percent to almost 1.8 million since 2013. The General Director of Statistics Austria, Tobias Thomas, emphasizes that in 2023 36.7 percent of the dependent employed people worked in such employment relationships, an increase in less than a third in 2013, which makes Austria's part -time quota of the second highest in the EU - only the Netherlands are even higher.

The reasons for this increase are diverse. The most common reason for women to accept a part -time position are family obligations, whereby 39.8 percent of women provide information on working part -time due to childcare obligations. In men, this reason only plays a subordinate role, where vocational training or the lack of full -time positions are more common motives. This inequality is also evident in the statista analysis, which shows the proportion of part-time employment in the EU: for women in the EU, this value is 29.3 percent, while in Austria the part-time rate for women is 51.6 percent, which illustrates their extraordinarily high labor market participation.

A look at the further development

In addition to the part -time jobs, the study also recorded an increase in temporary employment relationships by 20 percent. Tea work and marginal employment also increased, while the number of free service contracts has dropped significantly since 2013. This trend is also reflected in the numbers: half of the dependent women work part -time, while men usually strive for full -time positions. In women with young children, the part -time quota is even dramatically high, which makes the challenges for women in professional life clear. According to Eurostat, the part -time quota in the EU member states has also produced differences in gender distribution, further strengthening Austria's situation.
