Chancellor Stocker discusses household: Discuss stability for the future!
Ballhausplatz 2, 1010 Wien, Österreich - On April 1, 2025, the Federal Chancellery announced a job discussion on the overall -state budget, which will take place on April 2, 2025 in Ballhausplatz 2 in Vienna. The discussion is headed by Chancellor Christian Stocker and brings central political actors together, including Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler and Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger. Other participants include the President of the LH conference Wilfried Haslauer, City Association President Michael Ludwig, Community Association President Johannes Pressl as well as Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer and State Secretary Barbara Eibinger-Miedl.
The main topic of the conversation will be the stability and future viability of the overall -state budget, as well as the necessary cooperation between the federal, state and communities. Media representatives are invited to follow the event with camera flank from 4:00 p.m. before the ministers take the press around 5:30 p.m.
challenges in the financial situation
The financial challenges with which the federal government and the federal states are faced with the design of the budget. According to a report by the Federal Audit Office, the state and municipalities were financed by the federal government in 2021 with a total of 23.9 billion euros. This raises the question of the extent to which the federal government can maintain its financial obligations in the long term, since it has to increasingly take out loans to ensure a balanced budget. While the state's debt rates are falling, their income continuously increases and now exceed that of the federal government.
A consulting report recommends that the federal government should check its financial services to the federal states in order to address possible imbalances. The federal government's share has dropped by 10.3 percentage points since 1991, which is due to the waiver of sales tax shares in favor of the federal states.
budget forecasts for 2024
Economic development for 2024 is already poorer than originally forecast. The decline in interest rates and the falling inflation have some positive effects, but fundamental needs such as the extension of energy crisis measures and the increase in the climate monus have not been taken into account in the Federal Budget 2024. Wirtschafts forecasts expect a deficit of 19.1 billion euros, which is 1.7 billion euros better than originally assumed.
The less payments in the budget result from low interest payments of 1.8 billion euros and lower needs in various areas. On the other hand, there are also additional payments of 1.3 billion euros, which arise primarily through economic developments in the pensions and employment as well as changes in personnel requirements.
Overall, it becomes clear that the federal government and the federal states have to discuss a responsible financial policy in the upcoming discussions in order to fix the imbalance of the financial situation and to ensure the stability of the total state budget. The discussions in the Federal Chancellery will therefore be of crucial importance in order to find a sustainable solution that meets the needs of everyone involved.
