EU Mercosur Agreement: Historical step for Austria's industry!
Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - A historical breakthrough for international trade: On December 6, 2024, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the agreement of the EU Mercosur agreement. This is an important step for export -oriented industry, especially in times of economic uncertainty. Georg Knill, President of the Industrial Association, was optimistic: "This agreement creates a bright spot in difficult times". He emphasizes that Austria should rethink its negative attitude to this agreement, which already secures over 32,000 jobs. A successful conclusion would benefit both sides, Europe and South America. Knill points out that Europe has to act in a geopolitical environment that is characterized by uncertainties so as not to get back to behind, and that it has to prove itself all the more.
The agreement could bring significant economic advantages for the EU, including the abolition of 91 percent of tariffs to European exports to the Mercosur region. Such measures are intended to enable annual savings of around 4 billion euros for companies within the EU. This is particularly important to secure competitiveness in a global market, as the European Union . The effects of the agreement could thus have far -reaching positive consequences for the European and in particular the Austrian market. In the current situation where there are many industries in the recession, such a trade agreement is a step in the right direction to promote growth and employment.
The future steps are now in the hands of the EU member states that have to ratify the agreement. The industrial association urges the upcoming federal government to give consent to strengthen the existing trade relationships and to open the market for domestic companies. "The agreement shows that Europe is willing to consistently pursue its economic course even in challenging times," concluded Knill. A strong sign of the importance of free trade and cooperation at the global level is set.
