From camp to refuge: New asylum accommodation opens in Dachau!
Something big has happened in Dachau! A new asylum accommodation has now been opened on a historic site at Kufsteiner Straße 12, where a Nazi transit camp once stood. One could almost think that history is repeating itself, but this time with a happy purpose: providing refuge for people in need. As early as 1942, the Nazis collected forced laborers here, and in the years after the war, homeless people found a roof over their heads there. Now, after many years of planning, the new project has been launched.
The construction project includes four houses that offer space for a total of 186 people. The furnishings may appear sparse with their white walls and simple furniture, but District Administrator Stefan Löwl (CSU) emphasizes the greater emphasis on independence and integration that is promoted here. This occurs at a relatively high standard of living at moderate costs. In the four houses, each with three bedrooms per apartment, people with housing needs, also German citizens, can find a new place to stay. The settlement was created as an alternative to container housing complexes and gymnasiums and is intended to provide a better lifestyle.
Place full of history and meaning
The history of the property makes the opening something very special, as District President Konrad Schober emphasizes. Here, where suffering and despair once reigned, today's state shows values of compassion and openness that create a new home for many on this soil. The construction was not without rough edges: the financing was provided by the construction company, which has already successfully established the model in other places such as Schwabhausen and Erdweg. The apartments are rented inexpensively, but there are no amenities such as an internet connection. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung This is one of the few criticisms of the execution.
The inauguration ceremony took place with an interfaith prayer attended by both Christian and Muslim clergy. They blessed the new home with surahs, Bible passages and holy water - a true solidarity of religions in a modern world! This not only marks a new beginning for Dachau, but also writes a new chapter for humanity. The first residents are due to move in in January and, after annoying delays and discussions, will finally find a new home.
Important steps into the future
The staggering construction costs of 2,500 euros per square meter resulted in a project that is unprecedented in the region and yet remains without internet connection Radio TOP FM reported. Despite this deficit, the new accommodation creates a space that helps residents take the first step towards a secure future. As the Protestant pastor Gerhard Last emphasized at the inauguration, this is about togetherness: “It’s about the people!” And that is probably the most important message that comes from this historic place.
