Rhomberg Group: From Bregenz to a global sustainability pioneer!

The Rhomberg Group has fundamentally transformed itself since the 2000s and is positioning itself as a global rail technology and sustainability pioneer. Founded in 1886 in Bregenz, Austria, and today active internationally in the construction, resources and railway technology sectors, the company employs around 4,000 people. The strategic realignment, which is particularly evident in the railway technology sector, is setting new standards in the industry.

A significant step in development was the takeover of Bahnbau Wels GmbH in 2002 under the leadership of Hubert Rhomberg. This increased the strategic importance of the railway technology sector. In 2012, Rhomberg merged with the Swiss Sersa Group to form the Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group (RSRG), which has now developed into one of the company's strongest pillars. In the 2024/25 financial year, RSRG achieved sales of 816 million euros, an increase of 56 million euros compared to the previous year.

Growth and innovation

In the 2022/23 financial year, over 50% of group sales came from approximately 1.4 billion euros, which represents an increase of 7.5% compared to the previous year and is considered the highest sales in the company's history. In this context, the Rhomberg Group is active in important international infrastructure units, including the Koralm Tunnel, Semmering Base Tunnel and the Stuttgart 21 project. The company is also continuously expanding its projects and market shares internationally, especially in Canada, Germany and Switzerland.

The Rhomberg Group is increasingly focusing on innovative and sustainable wood system solutions. This is evident in leading projects such as the construction of a daycare center for Porsche and an office building in Ravensburg, as well as environmentally friendly residential complexes. A pioneering project in Dornbirn is the Stiglingen project, which includes 14 micro-apartments, equipped with photovoltaics and a sustainable energy supply.

Sustainability in focus

Sustainability has established itself as the Rhomberg Group's strategic guiding principle. The company focuses on wooden and hybrid construction, recycling solutions and energy-efficient building concepts. The resource centers, such as the Rheintal Resource Center in Dornbirn, set standards in the circular economy and process around 500,000 tons of excavated material annually, with over 50% of the building materials coming from recycled sources. In addition, climate-positive buildings are being built as part of the “Rhomberg Energy” program, which are equipped with modern technologies such as photovoltaics and heat pumps.

External awards such as the TRIGOS Award and gold ratings from EcoVadis confirm the company's efforts in the area of sustainability. The construction industry, which is responsible for a significant proportion of CO₂ emissions worldwide, is moving towards significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. The Rhomberg Group takes an active role here by using resource-saving raw materials and integrating the latest developments in the industry in order to continuously minimize its ecological footprint.

The future of the Rhomberg Group looks promising. The clear internationalization strategy and a large number of significant projects in countries such as Great Britain, Ireland, Australia and Canada show the potential for further expansion. The cost-efficient use of raw materials and the focus on sustainable solutions position the company as a pioneer in an industry that urgently needs to change.
