Storm warning: Northern Germany in the grip of strong gusts and train cancellations!

A violent storm has hit northern Germany in the last few days and caused significant traffic disruptions. According to that German Weather Service (DWD), squalls with speeds of up to 95 kilometers per hour can be observed particularly on the North Sea coast and on the northern German islands. The worst storm reached its zenith on the night from Sunday to Monday. Reports show that in countries such as Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, numerous small police operations were necessary to clear fallen trees and other dangers. Luckily there were no injuries.

Rail traffic on the brink

The effects of the storm were also felt on the railway lines. As the German railway announced that there were significant restrictions throughout northern Germany due to fallen trees. Regional trains were canceled or significantly delayed. The routes between Uelzen and Hanover, as well as Hamburg and Berlin were particularly badly affected. Trains operated by Metronome crashed into fallen trees, but there were no injuries.

With the approaching squalls and the damage caused by lightning strikes, many railway systems were affected. The situation has now stabilized and the routes are passable again. However, commuters and travelers had to be patient in the meantime while the fire brigade and railway crews were on duty making repairs. The forecasts indicate that unsettled weather will continue, dampening the anticipation of a white Christmas in northern Germany.
