Mega-renovation 2025: Hamburg-Berlin railway becomes a construction area!

Deutsche Bahn plans to comprehensively renovate numerous train stations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2025, especially along the busy route between Hamburg and Berlin. This route stretches over 278 kilometers and is used by 230 trains and up to 30,000 passengers every day, making it the most used direct city connection in Germany. Replacement traffic is planned for the general renovation in order to minimize the impact on travelers.

Construction work on the Hamburg-Berlin line is scheduled to be carried out between August 2025 and April 2026. Ralf Thieme, CEO of DB InfraGo, emphasizes the importance of good communication with travelers during this phase. Experiences from previous general renovations, such as those between Frankfurt and Mannheim, are used to support this. In addition to the general renovation of the tracks, switches and overhead lines, nine train stations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are also being repaired. The planned investments include three train stations in and around Rostock as well as the Altentreptow and Sternfeld train stations.

Details about the renovation work

The renovation work on the Hamburg-Berlin line is part of a larger plan by Deutsche Bahn, together with the federal government, to transform the heavily used rail network into a high-performance network. The aim is to create a digital track and a reliable Germany clock. In addition, the control and safety technology will be renewed. The work will be bundled into a compact nine-month time frame to minimize future construction work.

DB plans to present a detailed replacement concept for passengers and goods during construction work from January 2025. A functioning alternative transport system will be set up for travelers in order to mitigate the consequences of the construction sites. Furthermore, platform lengths at various stations should, where possible, be prepared for ICE traffic. The Neubrandenburg train station, which is scheduled to be operational again in March after months of construction work, is an example of the extensive renovation measures. By the end of the construction work, the platforms in five other locations will also have been renovated.

Overall, it is expected that once the general renovation work has been completed, less construction work will be necessary on this important connection in the following years, which should be a relief for travelers.
