Cambodia's PM nominates Donald Trump for Nobel Peace Prize
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced on Thursday that he has nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. He praised Trump's "extraordinary statesmanship" in resolving a border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand.
Trump's intervention as an example of extraordinary achievements
Published in a Facebook post, Manet accompanied the announcement with a letter he sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. In it he praised Trump intervention as an example of his “extraordinary achievements in easing tensions in some of the most restive regions of the world.”
Preventing a potential conflict
“This timely intervention, which averted a potentially devastating conflict, was critical to preventing widespread loss of life and paved the way to the restoration of peace,” the Cambodian leader wrote in his letter.
Details on resolving the conflict
A call from Trump to the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia on July 26 broke the deadlock in efforts to end the fiercest fighting between the two neighbors in recent history, Reuters reported. This led to one armistice, which was negotiated in Malaysia on July 28. On Thursday, both countries agreed not to rekindle hostilities and to allow observers from Southeast Asia access.
Consequences of the conflict
In total, 43 people died and more than 300,000 people were displaced in a five-day conflict that began with small arms skirmishes and quickly escalated into heavy artillery and rocket fire. Hours later, Thailand used an F-16 fighter jet for airstrikes.
Economic considerations and further nominations
The nomination was expected after Cambodia's deputy prime minister announced the plan last week. He thanked Trump for a 19% tariff on Cambodian imports, sharply reduced from a previously threatened 49%, which he said would have devastated the country's important garment sector.
Pakistan announced in June that it would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize recommend would, due to his efforts to resolve a conflict with India. Also Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nominated Trump last month for the award.
