Defense policy in upheaval: Experts are calling for longer basic military service!
Österreich - The debate about basic military service in Austria picks up speed! In view of the deteriorating geopolitical situation, an expert commission of the Federal Army will now check the possibility of extending the current six -month basic military service. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner is convinced that a solution to increase the operational readiness must be found after she was previously reserved. Like The crown reports , Tanner also notes that the current duration of the basic military service is "really very short".
The commission is directed by Erwin Hateseder, the militia officer. He described the abolition of mandatory militia exercises in 2006 as a "serious mistake" and emphasizes that Austria had to be able to defend again. Negotiations on this reform are already in progress, but the question remains whether there is enough political support for an extended service, since the government parties, including the ÖVP and the SPÖ, have so far shown little approval. According to of the Kleine Zeitung , the Commission's report should already be present until autumn.
geopolitical relevance and militia meeting
The geopolitical framework conditions have "changed massively negatively", which increases the pressure of action, according to the HAMESEDER, which increases the military structures. Nevertheless, the introduction of a mandatory basic military service for women remains clearly excluded. Tanner has also expressed concerns that an extended service could have negative effects on the labor market. This contradicts the views of some militia representatives who demand a comprehensive reform to ensure the operational readiness of the troops. In addition, there are intentions to be internal party, since some members of the militia publicly criticized Hamesheder and questioned their role in the government hearing.
