Tyrol's population grows: Record number of seniors despite unemployment!

Tirol, Österreich - The population of Tyrol recorded a continuous increase to 775,970 people on January 1, 2024, which corresponds to an increase of 4,666 people within one year. This is an important trend, since immigration, with 4,568 additional people, also plays a crucial role. Compared to the 6,733 immigrants in 2022, however, there is a decline. There were also 119 more births than deaths, with the total number of birth in Tyrol 2023 at 6,766. These figures illustrate the demographic development in the region, which is characterized by a variety of nationalities, since people from 159 different countries live in Tyrol, as the ORF reported.

unemployment rate in Tyrol increases

At the same time, the Tyrolean economy announced an alarming increase in the unemployment rate by 0.6 percentage points to 7.1 percent, which reflects the tense economic situation. Industrial branches such as the production and the automotive industry, which fight by unemployment by 16.2 percent, are particularly affected. The pressure is also noticeable in retail and logistics, with growth of 10 and 9.5 percent. This is due to the weak global demand and the continuing difficulties in the Austrian industry, as the Ministry of Labor and Economic Affairs stated, and as orf.at reported.

The combination of these developments suggests growing uncertainty on the labor market, in which job offers decrease and thus cloud the perspectives for many people in Tyrol. The decline in new registrations in the AMS by 12.8 percent compared to the previous year and the growing number of unemployed in various sectors show the current pressure on the economy. At the same time, a realignment of economic policy is required to improve the situation and to counteract future challenges, according to the voices from business and politics.
