Tirol's labor market in change: from a shortage of skilled workers to new opportunities!
The Tyrolean labor market shows a worrying development in December 2023: the number of unemployment rose to 15,814 compared to the previous year, which corresponds to an increase of 3.7 %. According to Sabine Platzer-Werlberger, the head of the AMS Tirol, this is mainly caused by a lack of qualified specialists. On December 31, 4.1 %of the Tyrolean population were unemployed, whereby men are more affected (5.4 %) than women (2.7 %). Unemployment among men increased by 4.7 % compared to the previous year, while it increased by 1.7 % in women. The trade, where unemployment has increased by 9.4 %, is particularly affected, as well as accommodation and gastronomy with an increase of 7.7 %.
support initiatives and future forecasts
The Tyrolean state government then decided financial support to facilitate access to the labor market. In 2025, a budget of 1.84 million euros will be provided. The Aki-Fair initiative supports long-term unemployed people, and around 350 people were able to benefit from her this year, as Astrid Mair, the State Councilor for Labor Market Affairs, informed. In addition, the Lea project, which helps young people with difficult prerequisites, are further funded financially.
The forecast for 2024 remains optimistic despite the tense geopolitical situation. Unemployment is expected to rise only slightly, while an increase in the employment participation of older workers and women as well as a strong immigration of labor from abroad is expected. However, the lack of personnel is identified as the greatest challenge. According to the AMS balance sheet, there are currently 6,700 vacancies, which underlines the need for workers despite increasing unemployment, such as "https://www.ams.at/REGIROL/NEWS/2024/01/der-tiroler-arbeitsmarkt---belanz- 2023-und-icht-2024-" target = "_ blank"> ams.at reported.
