Austria's women further behind: Stagnating gender pay gap!

Vienna, Österreich - The gender equality at the workplace is not progressing in Austria. According to information from vienna.at , only 66 percent of women are currently working full-time, a decrease of 10 percentage points since 2000. In contrast, 90 percent of the men are employed. The wage scissors remain alarming: On average, women earn almost a fifth (18 percent) less than men, whereby this difference could only be reduced by one percentage point compared to 2018. Agatha Kalandra from PWC warns that single women are particularly threatened by poverty in old age, and predicts that it could take up to 50 years for the wage gap.

The figures of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), which document a gender GAP labor market of 39 percent for 2023, are particularly revealing. This includes differences in gross hours earnings, working hours and the participation in employment of women and men. However, the gender pay gap only slightly dropped from 18 percent to 16 percent. Women continue to do 18 percent less paid working hours a month, with an average of only 122 hours in 2024, while men worked for 149 hours. This leads to an employment participation rate of 73.6 percent in women, compared to 80.8 percent in men, which holds the gender employer GAP with unchanged 9 percent, according to the latest surveys of Destatis.de .
